Zoos - at the heart of conservation

Through the support of millions of visitors, Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) zoos and aquariums are spending millions on conservation. In fact, a recent study shows that in 2010, AZA zoos and aquariums spent $130 million to protect animals around the world. In total, AZA zoos and aquariums supported 1,906 projects in 112 countries. Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)-accredited institutions coordinate, participate in, or support conservation projects. These involve conducting field work and research dedicated to the protection of species in the wild, recovering imperiled species and creating assurance populations, reintroducing rescued and rehabilitated animals and increasing conservation advocacy, action, capacity and fundraising.
