Tourism prospects good for 2013

One of the main concerns regarding inbound tourism to the UK during 2012 was that the Olympics would deter normal tourism traffic and that the number of people attracted to the Olympics would be insufficient to counter this effect.
This was certainly a realistic concern. The UK receives around 30m overseas visitors a year. If just 5 per cent of these visitors decided they’d stay away because of fears over hotel costs, chaotic transport or that the city would be overcrowded, it would have decreased visitor numbers by 1.5m.
This decrease in tourism numbers would not have been able to be compensated for by visitors coming from overseas specifically to see the Games. The most successful previous Olympics only attracted around 450,000 overseas visitors.
Had those 5 per cent stayed away, the potential loss for the UK tourism industry would have been around 1m visitors and £600m in revenue. If the downturn had been 10 or 20 per cent, you can see what a significant impact that would have had.
However, the provisional International Passenger Survey figures for 2012 show that this didn’t happen. Rather than visitor being deterred by the Olympics, total overseas visitors to the UK were up 1 per cent during the year. And, more importantly, revenue was up by 4 per cent for 2012.
While this doesn’t seem to be much of an increase, it is an above the rate of inflation for 2012, which means that inbound tourism provided real growth for the UK economy.
Putting these figures alongside the research that VisitBritain has undertaken that shows that hosting the Games has considerably enhanced the UK’s reputation as a destination in many overseas markets and there is the prospect that visitor numbers this year will show a significant post-Olympics boost. The Government’s aim is to generate £3.2bn of increased inbound tourism revenue over three years. Given these figures, I would not be surprised if this target was exceeded, especially as it seems that this may be the year that the global economy starts to grow again.
