AZA Support Conservation Mission

05 Nov 2013
by Jennifer Fields, Communications Coordinator, Association of Zoos and Aquariums
?AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums are working hard to protect wildlife and habitats for future generations

AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums, known for their role in animal conservation, also strive to conserve natural resources utilised in their business operations.

These actions include reductions in water and energy use, waste reduction and recycling and the green energy installations. In fact, green practices provide a direct benefit to animals and habitat, lessening the threats facing wildlife today, including pollution, invasive species and climate change.

To help the 223 AZA-accredited facilities develop and implement sustainable practices that support the missions of their facilities, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) published The Zoo & Aquarium Green Guide: Suggestions for Beginning or Expanding a Sustainability Program in 2011.

This autumn, this popular resource has been expanded into a two-volume set, which can be viewed at www.aza.org/sustainable-practices/

Together, these AZA Green Guides will help zoos and aquarium publicly demonstrate their commitment to resource conservation and engage guests in personal action to be a part of the solution for wildlife and resource conservation.

AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums continue to work hard to protect wildlife and wild habitat, both for the animals and the environment and for future generations to enjoy.
